St. Celestine Catholic School students and teachers, about 450 people in all, recited the rosary while walking around the Elmwood Park school during the afternoon of October 24.

Assistant Principal Maureen Detty said it was the school’s first outdoor rosary service featuring the entire student body.

Deacon Mike DeLarco introduced the service, and then the students began their walk.

“We did it with the intention of praying for world peace and thanking God for the gift of life itself,” Detty said. “It started with the members of our parish, St. Mother Theodore Guerin, which is the result of the recently combined churches of St. Celestine and St. Cyprian, and their Respect Life Committee members.”

Detty said it was a challenge to line up so many people, and “we definitely prayed for good weather.” She said the eighth grade planned out the activity.

“I think it went well, and we would like to do it again,” Detty said. “The students were engaged in the activity, especially the little ones, who are intent on their prayer habits and like to show the older students that they know their prayers.”
