Third Graders are immersing themselves in all things holly jolly this season – Students in Room 100 worked in within a small group or independently to construct a 3D structure for their gingerbread person.

Students used toothpicks and gumdrops as construction materials for their gingerbread person’s home. The goal was for each student to be an engineer and build a structure to fit their sized gingerbread cookie. Prior to the activity students listened to a read aloud entitled: The Plan for the Gingerbread House by Darcy Pattison and pictures by John Joven. As a whole class we discussed what a blueprint is and each student individually created their own blueprint. After construction students re-illustrated their blue print to show the modifications made from their original. Students collaborated and brainstormed collectively to engineer and construct a suitable structure for their gingerbread. Our gingerbread structures were a festive and fun way to engage the students and build their critical thinking skills, cooperative learning, collaboration, perseverance, planning, and design. This science theme focused on incorporating growth mindset, and leadership skills for the students.
