Third Graders are immersing themselves in all things holly and jolly this season. While listening to Christmas carols, students worked in small groups to construct a 3D structure for their gingerbread cookie.

Students had the choice of toothpicks or pasta, and gumdrops. Prior to the activity students listened to a read aloud entitled: The Plan for the Gingerbread House by Darcy Pattison and pictures by John Joven. After the read aloud students worked independently to illustrate a blueprint of an idea for a structure.

While in their small groups, students collaborated and brainstormed collectively to construct a suitable structure for their gingerbread. Our gingerbread structures were a festive and fun way to engage the students and build their critical thinking skills, cooperative learning, collaboration, perseverance, planning, and design. This week’s science focused on incorporating growth mindset, and leadership skills for the students.
