3rd Grade Science – Planting – Year 2024-2025

Third grade has been focusing on the difference between a science fruit and a science vegetable. We investigated cucumber, tomato, potato, celery, and radishes. We used real items to differentiate and discovered fruit has seeds inside. Whereas a vegetable does not. We extended our inquiry by planting a lima bean. We observed the root systems that sprouted, the bean case cracking open, and leaves beginning to sprout. The students were very invested in this activity and wanted to know what would happen if they transferred their Luna beans into a cup of dirt. Some students expressed that the bean is a living creature from God and we should take care of it. The third grade initiated the further exploration and we planted our bean sprouts into a cup of quality soil. Throughout the next two weeks we will be caring for our sprouts by providing water, sunlight, air, and soil. We will be collecting data and making observations of our newly honed sprouts. And we hope our sprouts grow into a plant!
