As a wrap up to Earth Week families supported their learner and supported the class unit on endangered animals.

As a cumulative assessment students and families had a week to work together in creating a 3D diorama which included their endangered animal of choice and a replication of the animal’s habitat. Students independently were to write 8-10 sentences sharing fun facts about their endangered animal, its habitat, its origin, and exploring what are the leading causes of the animal’s endangerment.

In class, we focused on the rhinoceros and how these animals are very dangerous to becoming extinct. We studied vocabulary such as endanger, extinction, habitat, deforestation, poaching, and sanctuary; by studying illustrations and using the context clues of a news article.

In class, students completed a text graph to answer questions in regards to what are major factors jeopardizing the well being of the rhinoceros. We looked into the role and lack of responsibility humans are playing in the endangerment of the rhinoceros. Lastly, we discussed the consequences to our environment and to humans if the rhinoceros does go extinct.

The goal of the week’s activities was to give a hands-on approach both at school and at home to the delicate balance of our ecosystems and for the students to feel empowered through gaining more knowledge about our future planet and the role they play in their global actions and choices today.
