We are learning about inherited traits, artificial selection, the process of scientists and farmers choosing traits (color and size) of living things (pumpkins) so that they are passed to the next generation of living things.
We discussed the positive aspects of having a larger type of produce; such as taste, cost, profitability, and feeding the masses.
The children then worked in small groups investigating a real pumpkin. The children used unconventional measuring, using unifix cubes and paper to measure the circumference and height of their pumpkin. Within their small groups, children had small group discussions as to why they believed the pumpkin would sink or float. We came together as a large group and conducted the experiment and we recorded their data.
