Third Grade celebrated Earth Day and promoted greater consciousness and appreciation for the Earth and its many precious resources. The goal for the week was for students to become more aware of the waste we each create individually and collectively. We started the week with a family engaging activity where students and families were encouraged to track and collect data on what was recycled and trashed for one evening.

Students studied the items they trashed and discussed the ways in which we can make better use of our trash. We reflected on the amount of plastic we dispose of on a daily basis. Students individually brainstormed how they can reuse the materials they viewed as trash. The week’s cumulative assessment on the topic was students creating a 3D art piece, display, or an item that serves a function using only recyclable or reusing materials in one’s home. All students wrote an 8-10 sentence paragraph describing their inventive piece, why they chose it, and sharing the materials reused and recycled. The presentations and 3D pieces were amazing and included an emotional support robot, a jet pack, a 3D piece depicting a family memory, bird houses, piggy banks, instruments, a marshmallow launcher, a plastic bag dispenser for grocery stores (so one doesn’t have to pay for a bag), and a confetti popper.

During Earth week students’ awareness of the need to protect the Earth and its natural resources for future generations was raised through hands-on school and familial support and collaboration.
